Mackie Conscious gets ‘lucky’ after all..

After years of recording songs that have been classified by many as “good music” on his own Conscious Production label and not creating the impact he so longed for, reggae roots recording artiste Mackie Conscious seems to have struck the right chord in an uncanny way. How many singers score a break-out hit by singing about his or her lack of success in the music industry?

Mackie Conscious (real name Dennis McKay) seems set to do just that. What else could one say upon hearing of the responses to his latest project, “Lucky Mi Nuh Lucky”? “The response, overwhelming, everybody is crazy about it even the radio disc jockeys when them play it, them just laugh. It’s the talk on the street and people all take it personally and seh, bwoy mi sing the song fe dem because dem a go thru the same experience…” Mackie explained to Island Groove in a recent interview. He continued to explain on how the song was developed, “Me a wash mi vehicle one day and mi hear some tune a play pon di radio and mi a seh, listen to dem song de man every other line beep out. Look pon a man like me who sing so much big tune, how come me nuh bus like some a dem man deh? Me seh dem lucky, so if dem lucky, a must lucky me nuh lucky,” Before the day ended the lyrics were complete.

The song has been enjoying heavy rotation on most radio stations and work has started on the video. So impacting is the song that radio disc jocks have been clamouring for a copy according to Mackie. At stage shows the feedback has been awesome he continued. Fellow artistes have been responding favourably to the song and the rhythm, resulting in ten other performers having already voiced including: Tony Rebel, Lutan Fyah, Queen Ifrika, Guidance and Ras Ghandi. All tracks were produced at McKay’s studio in Tower Isle, St Mary.

What seems like a huge hit for Mackie Conscious would be just reward for a man who has delivered songs such as: “What If”, “The World is in Trouble”, “Cell Phone on his Hip”, “Cyaa be a King if yuh nuh Royal” and “Should I Run among others”. The single, “Lucky Mi nuh Lucky” is featured on, ‘What If”, Mackie’s fifteen track album.
